Tanzanite - Rare and Beautiful

!±8± Tanzanite - Rare and Beautiful

What is tanzanite?

Unique. Rare. Beautiful. Blue. These are all words that can be used to describe the gemstone tanzanite. So, what exactly is it? This gemstone is made up of calcium aluminum silicate and is actually a member of the zoisite family of gemstones. But, because of its rarity and sheer beauty, it gets its own category.

Ages ago, metamorphic rock began forming a flat-topped hill at the base of Kilimanjaro. It formed inside this hill and the gemstone world has never been the same again. The local people as well as the jewelry industry fell in love with the shades of blue and purple found in them.

Where does it come from?

Unfortunately, there is only one location where this tantalizing gemstone can be found. Mine deposits are located at the base of Kilimanjaro in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. As a result, they are quite rare, particularly large stones and stones of exceptional quality. If you can get your hands on a natural stone, don't hesitate to snatch it up. You will pay for it, but it will be worth it to have this rare gem.

Birthstone for December

This rarely happens, but in 2002 the American Gem Trade Association named it as an official birthstone for December. If you are lucky enough to receive a tanzanite ring for your birthday, take good care of it. The rarity of this stone makes it a great heirloom.

If your 24th wedding anniversary is coming up, drop some hints for a tanzanite and diamond ring. Just like birthstones, anniversaries have special gemstones attached to them. For the 24th, it's this unique gemstone.

How to care for your gemstone jewelry

This gemstone is more delicate than other popular stones like the ruby or topaz. It rates a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, which means it is fairly soft. An opal rates a 5. So, never place tanzanite necklaces or other pieces in an ultrasonic cleaner or use harsh chemicals to clean them. Warm water and gentle soap will get the job done. Soak it and then polish it with a soft cloth.

The history and lore

The discovery of this stone occurred in 1967. A Maasai tribesman noticed a twinkling on top of a low flat hill at the base of Kilimanjaro. New York jewelers, Tiffany & Co. found out about this unique blue stone and named it after its country of origin. In 1968, the jeweler began selling tanzanite necklaces, tanzanite earrings and more.

The tribes in this area of Tanzania revered the color blue and only women who bore children could wear it. With the discovery of the beautiful blue shades of tanzanite, the Maasai tribesmen gift their wives with the gem when they have a baby. It honors the mother and protects the child. Maybe it should be made the official gemstone for Mother's Day.

This gemstone is so unique in its various shades of bluish-purple. It makes an elegant and sophisticated piece of jewelry suitable for all occasions. Even if you weren't born in December, you can still enjoy the beauty of a tanzanite pendant because this stone truly belongs to everyone. It is rare and it is universal.

Increase Water Intake, Improve Skin

!±8± Increase Water Intake, Improve Skin

Common skin problems such as acne, uneven skin tone, dry skin, etc. can improve drastically if you increase your water consumption.

Water Intake

Most physicians will agree...an adequate intake of water is essential to overall health and wellness. Water purifies the body in and out. Want an undeniable glow? Increase your water intake! Want to improve the tone and texture of your skin? Increase your water intake! Okay...okay....you get the point. LOL!

Another reason why drinking enough water is so important is because water aids in the removal of waste from our body. Not only does water remove waste but it helps carry the vitamins and minerals we ingest (through food, drinks or supplements) throughout our body and ultimately your SKIN!!!

So you're not into a bunch of water? It's ok. You have choices. I love to add citrus fruit to my water to give it a light flavor. Fill up a 2 quart pitcher with pure drinking water. Cut an orange into slices and place them into the pitcher. Leave overnight. The next morning you'll have a refreshing drink for pennies without having to shell out a bunch of money for those small packets of "flavoring".

So how much water is enough? It depends. What type of climate do you live in? Do you exercise regularly? Consult your physician for an estimate on the amount of water to drink.

After determining how much water you should consume each day, divide the amount over 10-12 hours.

(Drinking too much water can lead to water intoxification. Also, be careful of drinking too much water. Especially if you have kidney or adrenal problems.)

Take Care,

Laurren

!±8± All Natural - The Beauty Benefits of Coconut Oil

There are a number of great uses for coconuts. They are used for medicinal purposes, dietary purposes, and of course for the oh so fun coconut bra. However, coconuts are predominantly used in beauty products which line the shelves of beauty boutiques and drug stores. The antioxidant rich and antiseptic fatty acid loaded oil that is drawn from coconuts is one of the most highly prized products in the beauty world.

Coconut oil has a number of positive health, diet, medicinal, and beauty benefits. From the skin to the arteries, coconut oil offers many advantages to its users. When it comes to beauty, there are a wide range of products that all purport to be the "best" moisturizing and anti-aging products on the shelves. However, coconut oil is an age-old natural product with a longstanding history of top results.

All Natural: Virgin Coconut Oil
There are many consumers out there who desire all natural products. If you want to avoid beauty products with harsh chemicals, petroleum-based components, and artificial ingredients then an all natural virgin coconut oil product is perfect for you. Virgin coconut oil is unrefined which means that all of its natural components are in tact--in other words they are not stripped away during the refining process.

Helps Combat Skin Problems
There are a number of reasons why this oil is used in numerous skin care products--including coconut cream, coconut lotion, coconut soap, and so on. First, it is extremely moisturizing. It revitalizes skin and gives it a "glow" that many other products do not. It is well-known for soothing skin irritation and skin problems like eczema and psoriasis.

It is also full of antiseptic fatty acids which help stave off harmful bacteria and fungus in the skin. Once absorbed by the skin it protects it from certain bacteria and fungus that cause problems like athlete's foot, acne, warts, and more. In addition to this, it helps to clear away dead skin cells which smooths skin.

Antioxidants: Anti-Aging Properties
One of its most important benefits of this oil is its anti-aging properties. The oil is full of antioxidants which are well-known for slowing down the aging process of the skin. Regularly using coconut based skin care products can greatly slow down the development of things like wrinkles and liver spots. The antioxidants in coconut oil fight off and prevent the development of free-radicals. Free-radicals destroy the connective tissue in the skin, which ultimately causes it to lose elasticity and age noticeably over the years.

Making Pure and Natural Soap at Home

!±8± Making Pure and Natural Soap at Home

Many herbs are the pure and natural ingredients in soap that are great for sensitive skin. When you have a bar of natural soap in your hand, you've finally found the product that will do wonders for your hard-to-manage skin. Natural soaps can help improve acne or any skin problems.

What will you need to make your own natural soaps? For a basic soap, you'll only need water, lye, and some kind of fat and oil. For a more luxurious soap, you might want to add coloring dyes and scenting oils. You probably have water as close as your kitchen tap; some people prefer to use rainwater or distilled water in their soap.

So what about the oil? Just about any fat or oil can be used to make soap, from plant oils and hydrogenated fats to animal fats. If you have a chance to experiment, you'll find plant oils such as coconut oils will give a rich lather; olive oil soap will yield fine, silky bubbles that are soothing to the skin; and animal fats give you a denser soap.

'Saponification' is the technical name for the chemical process between lye and fat. It may take more or less time to 'trace,' but when it does and your batch starts to thicken, that's the time to add super fatting agents like avocado oil, cocoa butter, or shea butter. Then, pour the traced soap into molds, and let it harden. It will have to 'cure' for one to three days, and then dry a bit longer before you can enjoy it.

If you make your own pure and natural soaps, you can add extra vegetable fats towards the end of the process. The result will be a super-fatted soap that your dry skin will love. Or, if you'd like a soap that helps make your skin smooth and soft, add glycerin to the soap. You'll find that a glycerin soap will cleanse your skin without drying it.

Essential oils are also natural ingredients that you'll love to smell every day. You probably already know these as the pleasant-smelling oils that are used an aromatherapy. You can choose between sharp Mediterranean scents such as Basil, Bergamot, or Peppermint; softer scents such as Clary sage, Sage, and Thyme, or therapeutic oils such as Coriander, Eucalyptus, Lemon Grass, and Neroli. These oils will help counteract the lye smell that hand-made soap has a tendency to develop over time.
